Aims of Module
To develop a professional understanding of the principles and applications of risk management and the implications in an organisational context.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Demonstrate an understanding of the common law health and safety rules and the statutory rules relating to health and safety, which protect employees.
2 Explain and apply the common law health and safety rules and the statutory health and safety rules which protect employees.
3 Interpret and apply health and safety law and practice in a specific context.

Indicative Module Content
This module aims to provide students with an understanding of common law rules, duty of care, vicarious liability, history and sources of statute law in the UK governing health and safety; Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, European Health and Safety Law, Framework Directive. Additionally, the module will provide an understanding of risk management in relation to health, safety and the environment; the implications for the organisation in relation to structure, policies and procedures. The module will cover legislation and practice in the context of specific industries.

Module Delivery
The module is delivered to both on campus and distance learning students. All relevant materials are available on campus moodle, and the module will be delivered by seminars and self directed learning.
