RGU: Data Protection web pages
The Data Protection Act 1998 makes provisions for the regulation of the processing of information relating to individuals, including the obtaining, holding, use or disclosure of such information.
The purpose of the data protection web pages is to provide students and staff with useful advice and guidance on various issues relating to the use of personal information at RGU.
Welcome to the Data Protection web pages at The Robert Gordon University.
Protecting data is important to all of us at the University. Personal data is valuable and belongs to individuals who entrust it to organisations including the University. Individuals can suffer distress or harm because information about them is inaccurate, kept for too long, disclosed to unauthorised persons or used in unacceptable or unexpected ways beyond their control.
As members of staff, we have a duty of care towards our colleagues and students. When we collect and use staff and student information, we are trusted and expected to look after that information properly and not to abuse it. Prospective students, employees and other stakeholders have to have the confidence that their personal details will be safe at the University.
The Records Management Department plays an important role within the University and ensures that we comply fully with our statutory obligations under information legislation, including the Data Protection Act 1998.
