Teaching methods

The School of Applied Social Studies uses a variety of instructional methods including as appropriate; small group teaching, seminars, lectures, role-plays, simulations, laboratory experiments, workshops and projects. Student studies are supported by state-of-the-art facilities at Garthdee including an excellent library, over 2,500 desktop computers and full network facilities incorporating a virtual learning environment, the Virtual Campus. The school believes that learning should be applied to practice so students are encouraged to become reflective, independent learners, identifying and working towards their own learning objectives.

Small group seminars form an important part of teaching practice for Social Work and Social Science students.

They provide an opportunity for students to discuss key themes from lectures and their own reading.

Interaction with technology is also encouraged and forms a part of the teaching process, whether in seeking further information from the Internet or using multimedia learning tools designed to enhance face to face teaching practice.

Teaching materials are made available to both on Campus and distance students through the University's Virtual Learning Environment, CampusMoodle.
