Continuing Professional Development

The School is actively involved in offering Continuing Professional Development to those staff who are working in Social Work/Social Care and many other areas of work. This includes staff who are working for Local Authorities, Health Trusts, Voluntary Organisations and Private Organisations. The School provides post qualifying courses in social work/social care and contributes to the practice teaching and mental health officer training programmes in the North East of Scotland.

These and a range of other Short Courses the School is involved in delivering are linked to a number of professional requirements. For example, child protection work, mental health officer training and residential child care. The recent government report, Changing Lives emphasises the importance of continuing professional/employee development and RGU are currently developing a range of materials to support the new paraprofessional role identified within the report as being central to the future development of social work, as well as a range of other initiatives with and within social work/social care, education and health, including a new graduate certificate in social services practice which recognises practice specialisms.

The School has recently developed training materials on the Adults with Incapacity (Scotland) Act 2000 as well as materials relating to the new Mental Health (Care and Treatment) (Scotland) Act 2003 which will be used in social work departments throughout Scotland.

CELCIS provide a range of specialist training for residential child care workers, and the wider looked after children sector.

Staff maintain their own professional development by a range of activities, including direct practice, consultancy, safeguarding, court work and committee membership of a number of voluntary organisations including the Cyrenians, and the Association for Child and Adolescent Mental Health.

We are also keen to develop bespoke programmes of training and development for any organisation/agency and would be happy to discuss your requirements. We may also be able to accredit and academically validate your organisation/agencies current training programme(s). For contact details see below.
