Undergraduate and Postgraduate Courses
Social work
The social work courses at the School provide the knowledge and skills necessary for the Central Council for Education and Training in Social Work (SSSC) Diploma in Social Work qualification, which is required by all trained social workers, and for registration with the Scottish Social Services Council.
Students are taught about all aspects of social work practice, including community and residential care and social work with families and children and within the criminal justice system. Within these areas students study sociology, psychology, ethics, assessment, intervention and law. Honours students are introduced to management, interdisciplinary work and research and evaluation of practice and service delivery. The school offers places on a particular pathway in residential childcare. All students whichever route they choose to take towards gaining their SSSC Diploma in Social Work at RGU, are required to work to the same formal assessment of competence.
Applied Social Sciences
The BA (Hons) Applied Social Sciences offers modules in psychology, sociology, politics, social policy and health. It prepares students for work in many fields of people-centred work such as the social care professions, further research, teaching, human resource management and the police. The emphasis throughout the course is on the applied nature of the subjects studied, thus equipping students with key transferable and employment-related skills. This gives our graduates a wide range of employment opportunities.
