Aims of Module

To provide the student with the ability to critically appraise, synthesise and evaluate construction management situations under realistic conditions.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Examine and assess new and innovative commercial approaches to managing complex construction projects.
2. Critically review strategic IT led techniques, viewed as contemporary construction management tools.
3. Critically appraise timely decision making and choice of organisational structure and scheduling strategies available to the construction manager.

Indicative Module Content

This module will examine the planning and scheduling of construction projects and students will be encouraged to use construction planning tools to determine critical paths and program times. Coupled to this, students will explore IT approaches to strategic construction management such as IT portals. Commercial management will be investigated in terms of fiscal and cashflow protocol and opportunity.

Mode of Delivery

This module is delivered both on-campus and by distance learning. On-campus delivery is by a blended learning approach involving research, on-line activities including the application of management software. A substantial part of the module is devoted to student centred learning in the form of directed research to construction management journals, core texts and www resource material. Distance learning delivery is by on-line materials, activities and support.
