Aims of Module

To provide the student with the ability to analyse key legal issues relevant to the procurement and management of construction.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Analyse legal issues pertaining to construction contracts.
2. Evaluate legal and procedural aspects of dispute resolution.
3. Analyse the legal aspects of professional liability.

Indicative Module Content

This module promotes the ability to analyse the wide range of legal issues which may arise in construction contracts appropriate to a range of procurement arrangements. As examples this would include issues concerning pre-contractual negotiations, contract terms, relationships based on trust, long term contracts, methods of dispute resolution and professional liability.

Mode of Delivery

This module is delivered both on-campus and by distance learning. On-campus delivery is by a blended learning approach involving research, on-line activities, targeted lectures, group work and seminars. Distance learning delivery is by on-line materials, activities and support.

Component 1 is a coursework which normally consists of an investigative paper on a topic selected by the student.

Component 2 is a closed book, summative assessment.
