Aims of Module

To provide the student with the requisite skills to understand and apply the principles of design economics, pre-contract estimating and cost control in a built environment context.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Evaluate the relationship between building design and cost.
2. Appropriately apply traditional precontract estimating and cost control techniques in a built environment context.

Indicative Module Content

This module exposes students to building economics related to building design, traditional pre-contract estimating techniques (single and multi rate) as well as cost planning and cost control.

Mode of Delivery

For full time students this is a workshop based module supplemented with a small number of lectures. Students will be directed to core texts and a substantial amount of the module will be devoted to practical problem solving in workshops.
For distance learning students the module will be presented via Campus Moodle with online tutor lead activities, online mentoring a will be based upon student problem solving and directed study.
