Aims of Module
To provide the students with the contextual background to the construction industry and its allied professions, and its relationship to practices and processes within the built environment.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Identify how construction design solutions vary for different types of buildings.
2 Identify the impact of different design strategies on cost and programme.
3 Classify the stages of design and construction from inception to completion.
4 Identify factors that may affect project implementation within the construction industry.
5 Recognise the core contents of the module and relate to their application within the work place.

Indicative Module Content
Trends and legal framework, role within the economy, project stages, collaborative working, risks, health and safety, digital agenda, ethical practices, environmental impact, stakeholders, design approaches and processes.

Module Delivery
The module is delivered in Blended Learning mode using structured online learning materials/activities and directed study, facilitated by regular online tutor support. Workplace Mentor support and work-based learning activities will allow students to contextualise this learning to their own workplace. Face-to-face engagement occurs through annual induction sessions, employer work-site visits, and modular on-campus workshops.

Description: An integrated assignment consisting of illustrated written work to demonstrate understanding and application of the module learning outcomes and reflecting on the learning development throughout the module weeks that involves theory and practice.
