Aims of Module | |||
---|---|---|---|
To provide the student with with a critical and analytical understanding of social work interventions with people with substance problems and their relatives (both children and adults). Provide detailed evidence based knowledge of causes and impact of problematic substance use. |
Learning Outcomes for Module | |

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to: | |
1 | Appraise conceptual knowledge of psychological and sociological theories, and understanding as to why people develop problems with substances and their application. |
2 | Critically evaluate the legislative and social policy regarding prevention and service delivery for people with substance problems. |
3 | Demonstrate critical awareness and application of assessment, action planning and intervention strategies designed to facilitate change for people with substance problems within the context of evidence based practice. |
4 | Evaluate the implications of a person's substance problem for any children he/she is responsible for and any adults who are close to him/her and apply intervention strategies designed to both reduce the risks to such children and adults and enhance their abilities to cope. |
Indicative Module Content |
---|
Theoretical perspectives on substance problems and addiction. Societal attitudes to substance problems. Context of service delivery. Assessment and interventions with people with substance problems. Issues of gender and race. Concepts of recovery. Implications for an interventions with children and adults affected by another person's substance misuse. |
