Aims of Module | |||
---|---|---|---|
To explore the interpersonal and inner worlds of the person from differing perspectives including study of embodied and gendered identity. The influence of culture, religion, faith and unbelief will be considered. Experiences of prejudice, discrimination and oppression and the implications of asymmetries of power will be examined. |

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to: | |
1 | Critically appraise the significance to human development of early life experiences of culture, religion, faith and unbelief. |
2 | Critically analyse the influence of embodied and gendered identity on human experience and behaviour and demonstrate a critical awareness of the diversity of human sexualities. |
3 | Conceptualise the relevance for professional ethics of competing and diverse ideas and perspectives on what it means to be human. |
4 | Evidence recognition of the realities of discrimination, exclusion, oppression and alienation that may form part of the human experience. |
5 | Critically compare the medical and non medical perspectives on mental health diagnosis. |
Indicative Module Content |
---|
From a Psychodynamic, Biological and Social Science perspective students will study gendered existence and its vicissitudes, sexualities, culture, 'race' and discrimination and the unconscious dynamics which impact our development as humans. There will be a focus on experiences of faith, spirituality, unbelief and adverse childhood experiences (trauma). This includes study of the impact of mental ill health. |
