Aims of Module
This module aims to enable students to develop an analytical understanding of the various social processes that constantly shape and re-shape the urban environment and to be able to relate those understandings to the implementation of various CSR programmes.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Apply critically theories and perspectives on social, cultural and spatial elements of urban experiences and environments.
2 Discuss critically how contemporary challenges reorder and restructure the social, cultural and spatial elements of urban places.
3 Develop innovative solutions to possible challenges for urban life posed by those challenges.

Indicative Module Content
Urban theories - for example, Chicago School, Harvey, Lefebvre. Concepts of community and social capital. Corporate social responsibility in relation to host community. Corporate social legacy and urban environment. Case studies of Aberdeen and Detroit. Defining peak oil and climate change. Resilient city cultures. Green 'versus' technological solutions. Urban degeneration and urban regeneration. Community 'versus' government responses. Case studies of resilient or transition urban places: Totnes and Vauban

Module Delivery
A combination of lectures, seminars, presentations, directed online learning, directed reading, preparatory work and private study, as appropriate to the student's chosen mode of attendance.
