Aims of Module
To enable the student to apply knowledge and skills in the assessment and early stages of psychotherapy treatment with children of different ages, genders, with a range of presenting problems.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Critically analyse, select and justify appropriate methods of assessment with a range of children and young people.
2 Discuss and evaluate the clinical reasoning in relation to professional assessments for psychotherapy and state of mind assessments.
3 Demonstrate a critical understanding of clinical presentations and formulations in relation to the psychoanalytic assessments of a range of children and young people.
4 Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of transference phenomena and apply and evaluate transference and counter-transference in clinical sessions.
5 Critically analyse relevant psychoanalytic theories.

Indicative Module Content
ACP competency framework; NHS governance; relevant policy and legislation; psychoanalytic theories; adaptation of techniques to specific clinical populations across the lifespan and key transition periods eg perinatal, young child, latency, adolescence, parent and family work; looked after children and young people; complex trauma; comorbidity and developmental disorders.

Module Delivery
The module will primarily be undertaken in the clinical environment supported by a placement supervisor. In addition the student will undertake directed reading, seminars, lectures and practical workshops. Students undertake placement full time over the course of a calendar year working a 37.5 hour week with 28 days holiday and 8 statutory public holidays.

Description: Clinical Report 1 - technical and theoretical issues in work with a child or adolescent (3000 words).

Description: Clinical Practice - assessed on a competency basis against the Association of Child Psychotherapists Competency Framework

MODULE PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTOR
Explanatory Text
There are two components of assessment : Component 1 is a clinical report and component 2 is clinical practice, assessed on a competency basis against the Association of Child Psychotherapists Competency Framework. Students are required to pass both components.
Module Grade Minimum Requirements to achieve Module Grade:
A Grade A in component 1 and Pass in component 2
B Grade B in component 1 and Pass in component 2
C Grade C in component 1 and Pass in component 2
D Grade D in component 1 and Pass in component 2
E Grade E in component 1 and Pass/Fail in component 2 Grade A-D in component 1 and Fail in component 2
F Grade F in component 1 and Pass/Fail in component 2
NS Non-submission of work by published deadline or non-attendance for examination
