Aims of Module
To prepare students for Psychodynamic Counselling practice through an introduction to key elements of Psychodynamic thinking, relevant legislation, ethics and codes of professional practice and professional competencies essential to safe practice. To enable the students to develop key Psychodynamic Counselling skills.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Demonstrate a critical understanding of the relevant literature in order to initiate and maintain a Psychodynamic Counselling relationship.
2 Demonstrate the skills necessary to responsibly, sensitively and reflectively engage in a Psychodynamic Counselling relationship.
3 Demonstrate a critical and ethical understanding of relevant legislation and policy.
4 Communicate effectively about the role, clinical processes and emerging outcomes of work as a Psychodynamic Counsellor.
5 Critically engage and reflect in the learning group in light of the knowledge and understanding gained.

Indicative Module Content
Grounded in Psychodynamic thinking this module focusses on the theories which underpin Psychodynamic Counselling and enables students to put that theory into practice safely and ethically. The clinical practice of Psychodynamic Counselling is explored and critically evaluated.

Module Delivery
A range of teaching and learning approaches and environments will be utilised including: tutor presentations, triads, experiential workshops, large and small group discussions and student presentations.

Component 1
Type: Coursework Weighting: 40% Outcomes Assessed: 1, 3
Description: Essay, 2000 words (+/- 10%) critically analysing Psychodynamic theories in relation to practice as a psychodynamic Counsellor.
Component 2
Type: Practical Exam Weighting: 30% Outcomes Assessed: 2, 5
Description: Tutor review of capability in videoed triad and student's participation in the group process.
Component 3
Type: Coursework Weighting: 30% Outcomes Assessed: 4
Description: Video process report (1000 words +/- 10%) and analysis

Explanatory Text
Grade D or above must be achieved in components 1 and 3 and a Pass (P) in component 2 to achieve a module pass.
Module Grade Minimum Requirements to achieve Module Grade:

E A grade of E in any components 1 or 3 or an unsuccessful (U) result in component 2 will result in a borderline fail
F A grade of F in any components 1 or 5 or an unsuccessful (U) result in component 2 will result in a fail.
NS Non-submission of work by published deadline or non-attendance for examination

Module Requirements
Prerequisites for Module None, in addition to course entry requirements or equivalent.
Corequisites for module SSM119 The Psychodynamics of Being Human and SSM120 Families, Groups and Organisations.
Precluded Modules None.

ADDITIONAL NOTES
120 hours clinical Counselling practice are required over the 2 years of the PGDip Human Relations and Counselling with a further 100 hours for the MSc Human Relations and Counselling. In addition supervision is required at the rate of 1 supervision session to 4 Counselling sessions in this first year. A minimum 20 clinical Counselling sessions are required for completion of Component 2 of this module. There is a requirement of an 85% attendance rate in this module.
