Aims of Module
To develop a critical understanding of the key theories and evidence base of psychology as applied to the major psychological disorders, including symptoms, diagnosis (and its criticisms and alternatives), treatment including theories of psychotherapy, and the role of the Clinical Psychologist.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Demonstrate critical understanding of the main theories and concepts in contemporary approaches to psychological disorders.
2 Critically analyse the main problems inherent in diagnosis formulation and treatment.
3 Demonstrate critical understanding of the symptoms and theories of aetiology for a range of psychological problems and disorders.
4 Critically evaluate treatment strategies and theories of how they work, including approaches to psychotherapy and psychotropic medication.

Indicative Module Content
Conceptualising mental health. Medical model vs. psychological models. Diagnosis: Benefits and criticisms. Psychiatric classification systems such as DSM and ICD Case formulation. Treatment in clinical psychology. Psychotherapy. Depression. Bipolar disorder. Anxiety disorders. Psychological trauma. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Dissociative disorders. Obsessive-Compulsive disorder (OCD). Personality disorder. Psychosis. Autistic spectrum. Dementia.
