Aims of Module
1.To provide candidates with the knowledge,skills and practice experience to exercise the powers and duties of the MHO in relation to mentally disordered offenders and children, young people and families taking full account of the interface with related legislation and guidance within the relevant policy and procedural contexts. 2.To enable candidates to critically analyse and evaluate their learning and practice with individuals, families, carers and significant others when undertaking the role of MHO.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Demonstrate critical understanding of mental wellbeing and mental disorder in relation to offenders, children, young persons, families and carers in the context of multi-diciplinary assessment for care and treatment including risk assessment and criminal procedures.
2 Critically understand and apply relevant legislation, policy, guidance and procedures appropriate to the role, powers and duties of the MHO in the context of the forensic psychiatric network and children and young people mental health services.This will include developing an understanding of the interplay of differing Acts.
3 Demonstrate critical reflection and analysis of professional tensions,challenges and conflicts in relation to the role of the MHO as is relevant to this Module.
4 Demonstrate and evaluate competence and direct practice skills as required by the Standards and Practice competences to achieve the MHO award as prescribed by the SSSC.

Explanatory Text
This Module is assessed by three components: an essay, law assessment and assessment of practice. The essay's contribution to the overall module grade is Major and the law assessment's contribution to the overall grade is Minor. To pass this module overall, students must obtain a minimum grade of D for BOTH essay components and a Pass for the assessment of practice.
