Aims of Module
1.To provide candidates with the knowledge, skills and practice experience to exercise the civil powers and duties of the MHO within the Mental Health (Care and Treatment)(Scotland) Act 2003 taking full account of the relevant policy and procedural context. 2.To enable candidates to critically analyse and evaluate their learning and practice with individuals, families, carers and significant others when undertaking the role of MHO.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Demonstrate critical understanding of the nature of mental wellbeing and mental disorder and the options for care, treatment and approaches to recovery in relation to individuals, families and carers.
2 Demonstrate ability to reflect upon appropriate use of authority, autonomy and leadership in relation to complex assessments and decision making, taking into account need care and risk.
3 Critically understand and apply relevant legislation, policy, guidance and procedures appropriate to the role, powers and duties of the MHO in the context of collaboration with significant others.This will include developing an understanding of the interplay of differing Acts.
4 Demonstrate critical reflection and analysis of professional tensions,challenges and conflicts in relation to the role of the MHO.
5 Demonstrate and evaluate competence and direct practice skills as required by the Standards and Practice competences to achieve the MHO award as prescribed by the SSSC.

Module Delivery
Distance learning - A combination of direct teaching,directed group study, on-line self directed learning and private study using a range of materials combined with direct practice experience in the role of trainee MHO.

Explanatory Text
This Module is assessed by three components: an essay, law assessment and assessment of practice. The essay's contribution to the overall module grade is Major and the law assessment's contribution to the overall grade is Minor. To pass this module overall, students must obtain a minimum grade of D for BOTH essay components and a Pass for the assessment of practice.
