Aims of Module

Upon completion of this module the successful student will have developed a capacity to evaluate the outcome of his or her own interventions through the evidence of the other competencies entailing effective work in complex situations.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Show sensitivity to individuals' needs for personal respect, choice, dignity and privacy while exercising the Mental Health Officer role.
2. Apply knowledge of Mental Health legislation, related Codes of Practice, national and local guidance, and to base Mental Health Officer practice on a critical evaluation of a range of research relevant to practice.
3. Exercise the appropriate use of authority and autonomy together with an appropriate use of self reflection, consultation and supervision.
4. Work with the conflict between the inherent power in the Mental Health Officer role and the objectives of empowering practice and advocacy.
5. Effectively manage difficult situations of anxiety, risk and conflict, reflecting on their impact to self and others, and evaluate the outcomes of interventions with service users and others, including the identification of unmet need.

Indicative Module Content

Self-directed study of a specialised aspect of MHO work (for example, learning disability, substance misuse, older people and children and families).

Focus on consolidation of overall learning from the course, showing integration of learning and practice and studied area of specialism.

Self-evaluation and analysis of practice. As the assessment is based on competence the coursework is assessed as pass/fail only and, therefore, a grade will not be awarded.
