Prerequisites for Module

Successful completion of Modules SSM003, Collaborative Working and SSM004, Knowledge Base For Mental Health Officer Practice.

Aims of Module

Upon completion the successful student will have demonstrated an ability to apply risk assessment to practice situations, to plan, negotiate and manage compulsory admissions, to account for the implications of mental disorder upon service users, children, families and carers; to apply a critical understanding of treatment and interventions, to obtain, analyse and share appropriate information; to manage the decision making process and to communicate appropriately to establish effective relationships.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Respect individuals' qualities, abilities and diverse backgrounds, enabling them to contribute to decisions which effect their quality of life and which may effect their liberty.
2. Apply knowledge of Mental Health legislation, related Codes of Practice, national and local guidance.
3. Recognise, assess and manage risk in the context of the Mental Health Officer role, and plan, negotiate and manage, compulsory admission to hospital.
4. Have a critical understanding of the implications of a range of relevant treatments and interventions for service users, children, families and carers, and obtain, analyse and share appropriate information from individuals and resources in order to manage the decision making process.
5. Provide reasoned verbal and written reports to promote effective decision making and accountable MHO practice, and communicate appropriately with and establish effective relationships with service users and carers in undertaking the statutory mental health role.

Indicative Module Content

Theory and practice in the process of risk assessment and maangement, management of challenging behaviour and the application of a critical understanding of treatment and intervention.

Social Circumstances Report (written under the auspices of a MHO). Evaluation of learning and analysis of practice. As the assessment is based on competence the coursework is assessed as pass/fail only and, therefore, a grade will not be awarded.
