Aims of Module

Upon completion, the successful student will have demonstrated an ability to apply knowledge of mental health and related law, codes of practice, policy, professional roles and duties, functions of courts and other bodies and a critical understanding of mental disorder.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Apply knowledge of national and local guidance and an explicit awareness of the legal position and accountability of the MHO role.
2. Compile and complete statutory documentation, including an application for admission and to present the issues to a legal hearing.
3. Identify and critically discuss a range of models of mental disorder, including the contribution of social factors.
4. Critically appraise the implications of mental disorder for service users, children, families and carers.

Analysis of a prescribed case study, relating knowledge base to a range of models of mental disorder. As the assessment is based on competence the coursework is assessed as pass/fail only and, therefore, a grade will not be awarded.
