Prerequisites for Module

Social Work Qualification and Registration. Emplopyment in a Social Work Agency with 2 years Post Qualifying experience and some experience of Mental Health work.

Aims of Module

Students will be expected to demonstrate practice skills of planning, intervening using a range of networks and applied knowledge of the Adults with Incapacity (Scotland) Act 2000 in relation to other relevant legislation and policy in conjunction to an awareness of the rights of service users and others and an awareness of discrimination in relation to those who receive services.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Identify, challenge and, where possible, redress discrimination and inequality in all its form in relation to MHO practice, and to promote the rights, dignity and self determination of individuals consistent with their own needs and wishes.
2. Apply knowledge of other legislation, Codes of Practice, national local policy and guidance.
3. Articulate the role of the MHO in the course of contributing to effective inter-agency and inter-professional working.
4. Use networks and influence collaborative working with a range of individuals, agencies and advocates.
5. Contribute to planning and implementing options for care such as discharge, aftercare and alternatives to compulsory admission, and to use a critical evaluation of local and national policy to inform MHO practice.

Indicative Module Content

Focus on, multi-disciplinary/inter-agency working, utilisation of networks, discharge protocols and aftercare support. The module will focus on the study of local resources and their exploration in group study and specialised observational placements. By completion of the module the candidates will have demonstrated a working knowledge of relevant resources.

Evaluation of learning and analysis of practice. As the assessment is based on competence the coursework is assessed as pass/fail only and, therefore, a grade will not be awarded.
