Aims of Module

To enable the student to critically analyse ideas that underpin service user and carer involvement and participation and to evaluate strategies for the application of these to professional practice.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Critically analyse theories and ideas of powerlessness, professional power, models of empowerment and advocacy within the context of current health and social care policy.
2. Critically analyse methods and procedures that are designed to promote the involvement and participation of service users and carers in service planning and service delivery.
3. Critically appraise the role of professsionals and organisations in the application of participatory strategies.

Indicative Module Content

Legal and social policy context in health and social care in relation to user involvement etc.

Experiences of clients/patients in using professional services.

Experiences of informal carers.
Use of patient audits; customer satisfaction surveys.

Professional authority and power.

Models of understanding discrimination and oppression.

Normalisation, person centred practice and rights based work.

Models of empowerment.

Models of advocacy: individual, group, collective.
Support and preparation for greater involvement

Service user involvement in service planning including user controlled organisations.

Service user involvement in monitoring and evaluation of services.

Mode of Delivery

This module will be delivered by a 2 day introductory workshop;open learning materials with online support (discussion groups and forum) and tutorials;2 day summative seminar based sessions at conclusion
