Aims of Module
To provide the student with the ability to evaluate and apply a range of conceptual frameworks and methods of working with people who may be at risk of harm.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Identify and critically evaluate concepts of harm, safety, and protection in society as well as developments in law and policy in response to risk and harm which affect social work practice and have a critical understanding of the significance of protection work as it relates to service users who may be at risk of harm, in a wide variety of circumstances.
2 Critically analyse the role of social work professionals in assessment, including risk assessment and intervention when working with people experiencing harm
3 Understand ethical challenges and tensions in practice as these relate to the risk, protection and rights of people experiencing harm.

Indicative Module Content
Theoretical perspectives on protection; safeguarding; safety; citizenship; neglect, abuse, and harm in context of working with adults. Societal attitudes to harm and abuse. Risk assessment and management. Policy and legal context around protection, public protection, and harm reduction. Methods of working with adults with a wide range of needs and circumstances who may experience abuse or harm in a wide range of domains. Ethical basis for intervention; consideration of ideas of citizenship, human rights, risk taking, choice and self-determination. The module is delivered and underpinned by a commitment to core social work values of respect, individualisation, empowerment, anti-discriminatory and anti-oppressive principles and upholds the values and ethical practice standards that reflect the requirements relating to engagement with public protection
