Aims of Module
To examine sociological concepts of community, place and identity historically and contemporarily in order to understand how we think about place and our relationship to it in a global and local context.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Critically demonstrate knowledge and understanding of key sociological concepts in relation to community, place and identity.
2 Analyse global and local political, social and economic issues that affect a sense of place.
3 Determine historical processes that affect contemporary and future ideas of communities, places and related identities.

Indicative Module Content
We will examine how structural inequalities, legacies of colonialism, and structures of power affect our relationships to place. Particularly, we will consider: historical and contemporary theories and social processes relating to: space, place and community; making the modern city; storytelling; belonging, identity and difference; colonialism and space; uneven geographies, exclusion and inequality; stereotypes, stigma and society; power, space and memory; contested spaces.

Module Delivery
This is a mainly lecture based module with supporting seminars/workshops and student-centred learning. The on-campus activities will be supplemented and supported with online activities where appropriate.
