Aims of Module
This module gives students an overview of the history, theory and practice of international development. Students will examine different meanings and objectives of global development and evaluate competing theories of development. They will also critically engage with global power relations, issues around colonialism and decolonisation, and with representations of the Global South/ Developing World.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Critically engage with contemporary international development, political economy and global power relations.
2 Demonstrate critical awareness of key development actors, such as international financial institutions, states, companies, civil society organisations, and how they frame developmental issues.
3 Critically evaluate some key theories in the field.

Module Delivery
This is a mainly lecture based module with supporting seminars/workshops and student-centred learning. The on-campus activities will be supplemented and supported with online activities where appropriate.
