To provide the student with the ability to evaluate social work with people with substance problems. |
Learning Outcomes for Module | |

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to: | |
1 | Critically evaluate psychological and sociological theories as to why people develop problems with substances. |
2 | Critically evaluate the legislative, social policy and organisational context of prevention and service delivery for people with substance problems. |
3 | Critically apply knowledge of assessment and intervention strategies. |
Indicative Module Content |
---|
Theoretical perspectives on substance problems and addiction. Societal attitudes to substance use. Methods of social control, including legislation. Context of service delivery. Assessment of intervention. Issues of gender and ethnicity. The module is delivered and underpinned by a commitment to core social work values of respect, individualisation, empowerment, anti-discriminatory and anti-oppressive principles and upholds the values and ethical practice standards that reflect the requirements relating to engagement with public protection. |
