Aims of Module
To enable the student to apply knowledge and critical understanding within the context of an honours dissertation to a chosen area of practice or policy relavent to looked after children and young people.
Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

Design and undertake a research project in social work.

Evaluate a range of social science and social work and other literature relevant to their research proposal.

3. |
Use research literature and/or primary research to address their research question(s).

4. |
Write a dissertation which critically evaluates implication of their research for practice.

5. |
Ensure that all research activity is cognisant of ethical codes of practice.

Indicative Module Content
Advanced project management skills, Time Management, recording, data handling. Dissertation writing skills. Proposal. Critical inquiry/literature review. Presentation - structuring, drafting, editing. Advanced IT applications, Web/literature searching. Research to Practice. Informing and evaluating social work practice.
| Ethical standards. Permissions. Rights. Privacy. Confidentiality. Through research of the subject matter students will meet the expectations and knowledge requirements of key capabilities in child care and protection (Scottish Executive, 2006).

Mode of Delivery
This module is based on directed and private study supplemented by lectures, workshops and tutorials. Each student will be allocated a dissertation supervisor from whom he/she will receive tutorial support and advice. Meetings will be pre-arranged between student and supervisor who will act as facilitator.
