Aims of Module
Provide an understanding of the philosophical approach to social and ethical isues. Consider critically some key ethical concepts, principles and issues which have relevant to decision making in social work practice. Show awareness of the links between codes of practice, legal requirements and professional conduct.
Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

Show an understanding of the nature of philosophical reasoning, conceptual clarification and ethical theory.

Demonstrate links between different codes defining ethical practice, legislation and the requirements of professinal conduct.

Demonstrate knowledge of "traditional" social work values and recent changes in the value base of social work.

Reflect on and critically analyse some significant ethical issues that arise in social work practice at a personal and professional level.

Indicative Module Content
Ethical theories, issues and dilemmas. Traditional and modern values in social work. Professional codes of ethics and other sources of social work values. Ethical principles and their application in professional practice. Ethical issues relating to respect, privacy and confidentiality, informed consent, self-determination and empowerment. Anti-oppressive practice, the promotion of social justice and the moral rights of services users.
