Aims of Module
To facilitate the student's ability to evaluate critically the concept of psychological disorders, and the alternative approaches to mental health. To enable the student to apply a deep knowledge and understanding of the most prevalent forms of psychopathology, their symptoms, aetiologies and treatments.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Demonstrate a critical understanding of the principal theories, concepts and principles in contemporary approaches to psychological disorders.
2 Critically conceptualise complex/professional problems and issues with diagnosis formulation and treatment.
3 Demonstrate a critical understanding of the principal theories and concepts surrounding diagnosis and the symptoms and possible aetiology of a range of psychological disorders
4 Critically evaluate wider literature and consolidate knowledge surrounding the diagnosis and treatment of mental health disorders by discussing wider conceptual issues and implications of diagnosis and treatment strategies.

Conceptualising mental health; Medical model vs. psychological models; Diagnosis: Benefits and criticisms; Psychiatric classification systems such as DSM and ICD; Case formulation; Treatment in clinical psychology; Psychotherapy; Depression; Bipolar disorder; Anxiety disorders; Psychological trauma; Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD); Dissociative disorders; Obsessive-Compulsive disorder (OCD); Personality disorder; Psychosis; Autistic spectrum; Dementia;

Module Delivery
This is a mainly lecture based module with supporting seminars/workshops and student-centred learning. The on-campus activities will be supplemented and supported with online activities where appropriate.
