To analyse the construction and development of national and cultural identities within the UK.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Discuss the formation of national and cultural identity.
2. Analyse, drawing on political and social events, current trends in identity and culture.
3. Debate how shifts within the structure of the UK may affect constructs of identity and culture.
4. Evaluate theories of identity and culture.

Indicative Module Content

Theories of Nationalism, Theories of Culture, National Identity and social distinction, Selling National and Cultural Identities, Globalisation and national identity.
