Aims of Module

To develop further the student's critical abilities to use relevant sociological and social policy theories in identifying structural processes and barriers which contribute to social exclusion among particular groups of people.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Critically examine the major types of housing tenure.
2. Analyse and evaluate the origins and development of social housing in British Society with reference to relevant sociological theories and apply these to current housing problems.
3. Evaluate empirical evidence of the social exclusion experienced by various minority groups in Britain.
4. Critically apply relevant theories to explain the development of various policy responses to socially excluded groups in Britain.

Indicative Module Content

Consensus and conflict models of housing. Housing and social policy. Impact of demographic and economic change on housing provision. Homelessness. Development of social movements among various groups experiencing social exclusion e.g. disabled people, minority ethnic groups, gay, lesbian and bi-sexual people. Development of (anti) discrimination legislation. Principles and effectiveness of equal opportunities policy.

Mode of Delivery

This module is based on lecture and seminar group discussion. It also requires students to undertake critical reading of relevant sociological and social policy literature.
