Aims of Module
To demonstrate competence in independent research in a chosen field of study.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Review the literature on a research topic and produce a research proposal.
2 Critically evaluate and apply appropriate research skills and analysis in relation to the agreed topic.
3 Demonstrate research management skills at an appropriate level.
4 Produce a critical and logical interpretation of their research in the form of a written dissertation.

Indicative Module Content
Student-led research under supervision, to include: Literature review. Use of IT applications for research, data handling, and, where appropriate, data analysis. Conducting research. Writing-up. Critical Analysis. Students are explicitly encouraged to explore issues around equality and diversity that are relevant to them and the topics they wish to explore.

Module Delivery
This is a practical module devoted to research in an agreed field and may involve a wide range of techniques. There is provision at the start of the module for workshops on literature/research based techniques and resources. Each student will be allocated to a supervisor from whom s/he will receive support and advice.
