Aims of Module

To assist students to develop an understanding of ethical practice and an anti oppressive professional value base
To enable students to understand, apply and evaluate a range of key concepts underpinning assessment and intervention in social work practice
To help students develop an understanding of the importance of reflective practice and evidence based practice in contemporary social work


Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Discuss and evaluate the values underpinning social work practice and the nature of ethical practice in a diverse society.
2. Differentiate between models of intervention, theories of explanation and perspectives and evaluate the interface and application of these different theoretical concepts in contemporary social work practice.
3. Discuss and apply a range of theoretical approaches to assessment and intervention within social work practice.

Indicative Module Content

Social work values and ethical dilemmas, anti-discriminatory practice, ethical practice, anti oppressive practice, communication, methods of assessment and risk assessment, methods of social work intervention, task centred casework, crisis intervention, person centred planning, psychosocial intervention, cognitive behavioural therapy, evidence based practice, reflective practice, social policy, social divisions, social exclusion, health, personal social service, risk assessment and management, systemic practice.

The module deals with the application of theories of social work assessment and intervention, where within the broad discourse on social work practice there is a specific focus on children and families. This core knowledge is supplemented by skills and competency work via a range of teaching methods that uphold the knowledge, skills and professional confidence and competence requirements of Key Capabilities in Child Care and Child Protection (Scottish Executive, 2006). The module is delivered and underpinned by a commitment to core social work values of respect, individualisation, empowerment, anti discriminatory and anti oppressive principles and upholds the values and ethical practice standards of Key Capabilities.
