Aims of Module
To provide the student with the ability to evaluate social work with people with substance problems.
Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

Describe, apply and evaluate psychological and sociological theories as to why people develop problems with substances.

Outline and evaluate the legislative, social policy and organisational context of prevention and service delivery for people with substance problems.

Identify and apply knowledge of assessment and intervention strategies.

Indicative Module Content
Theoretical perspectives on substance problems and addiction. Societal attitudes to substance use.
| Methods of social control, including legislation. Context of serivce delivery. Assessment of intervention. Issues of gender and race.
