Aims of Module | |||

To examine violence through sociological theories, concepts and methods to help understand why individuals and groups become perpetrators and victims of violence. |

1 | Critically demonstrate knowledge of key sociological contributions to the study of violence. |
2 | Analyse a specific example of violence. |
3 | Apply sociological knowledge to a case study of violence. |
Indicative Module Content |
---|
The historical and contemporary social processes that contribute to different forms of violence ranging from individual actions to genocide. Subjects to be examined include: Historical and sociological approaches to violence; Gangs and youth violence; Hate crime; Violence, crime and gender; Conflict in schools; Political violence; Ethnic violence; Religion and violence; Resource conflict. |

This is a mainly lecture based module with supporting seminars/workshops and student-centred learning. The on-campus activities will be supplemented and supported with online activities where appropriate. |
