Aims of Module
To provide the student with the ability in group care settings to practice ethically and professionally within the context of current policy and legislation.

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

Indicative Module Content
Public care and stigma. Residential establishments as organisations and institutions.Containing anxieties and institutions; institutional defences against anxiety, splitting, helplessness, task and anti task. Self and identity in institutions, difficulties in the attachment process. System failure; moral panics and public outrage. Throughcare. Methods of intervention; group dynamics and process in institutional settings. Lifespace and opportunity led approaches. Systemic approaches - therapeutic communities, social pedagogy, behaviourist approaches. Self caring, resident's rights and the understanding and management of challenging, aggressive and violent behaviour. Touch, sexuality and power within group care settings. The Management of entry into and leaving from group care settings. Models of key working and approaches to care planning within group care settings. The reflective and reflexive practitioner. Therapeutic relationships. Staff support and supervision. User involvement. Key capabilities in Child Care and Child Protection.
