Aims of Module

To enable the student to contribute effectively to safe care practices with awareness of children's rights, relevant legislation and child care systems across a range of disciplines.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Discuss the concept of the continuum of care and the role of culturally sensitive practice in the promotion of child welfare.
2. Analyse alternative theoretical bases of child abuse, its various forms, prevalence, outcomes, professional responses and implications for self.
3. Demonstrate knowledge, reflection and application of multi-faceted safe caring practices within a groupcare context.
4. Explain the relevance and application of legislation and rights to child care practice.
5. Appraise organisational structures, procedures and inter-disciplinary frameworks as they govern prevention and responses to child protection practice.

Indicative Module Content

Continuum of care. Prevention and support services for children and families. Theories of child abuse including self-harm and bullying. Institutional abuse. Professional responses to abused and abuser. Legislation. Rights, advocacy, empowerment and whistle-blowing. The Children's Hearing System. Safe caring, creating a protective environment. Using creative techniques to engage with young people who may have been subject to trauma. Care and control. Managing risk and dangerousness. Skinner principles. Sexuality, sexual health and HIV. Learning from inquiries - the lessons of the past. The investigation of abuse. Case conferences. Multi-disciplinary working. QA systems. Key capabilities in Child Care and Child Protection.
