Aims of Module

To enable the student to critically evaluate practices within group care relevant to health outcomes and the needs of children and young people with a disability or mental health problem, within respective conceptual frameworks.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Evaluate from a social policy perspective health outcomes for care leavers and issues relevant to children and young people with a disability and/or mental health problem.
2. Appraise specific legislation governing the needs and rights of looked after children and young people with a disability and/or mental health problem and those of their carers.
3. Comment effectively on health promotion strategies within groupcare.
4. Explain the relevance and application of physiological, sociological and psychological concepts as they inform understanding of health, disability and mental health problems.
5. Evaluate a range of methods of working with children and young people with a disability and/or mental health problem within inter and multi-disciplinary practices.

Indicative Module Content

Social policy issues as they underpin key legislation rights, representation and empowerment and provision. Health promotion related to diet, exercise, sexuality, pregnancy and drugs. Aetiology and constitutional factors. Diagnostic classification systems. Application of physiological, sociological and psychological perspectives and their impact. Social and medical models of disablity. Impact of impairment and the Disability Environment. Methods of working with children and young people with a disability and/or mental health problem including groupwork, cognitive therapy and communications, working with challenging behaviour, life space. The role of psychiatry and clinical psychology. Inter-disciplinary and inter-agency working.
