Aims of Module
To provide students with the skills to undertake, plan and organise social science research using qualitative methods.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Critically appraise qualitative research methods.
2 Evaluate the applicability of particular qualitative research methods.
3 Critically demonstrate knowledge of ethical issues in the research process.
4 Develop a systematic approach in reviewing literature.

Indicative Module Content
We will engage with qualitative research process, considering questions around: the philosophy of social science research; the importance of ethics; modes of data collection including interviews, online methods, ethnographic observation; modes of data analysis including thematic analysis, critical discourse analysis and content analysis. The module will consider critical approaches to understanding how research is situated in society and the importance of recognising power and positionality in social research.

Module Delivery
This is a mainly lecture based module with supporting seminars/workshops and student-centred learning. The on-campus activities will be supplemented and supported with online activities where appropriate.
