Aims of Module
To provide a critical knowledge of contemporary medicine and developments within the sociology of health and illness.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Reflect on the development of modern biomedicine and its contemporary efficacy.
2 Identify the relationship between structural processes and health.
3 Identify the relationship between society, self and the body.

Indicative Module Content
Issues in the sociology of health and illness; class and health inequality, genders and health inequality, ethnicity, race and health inequality, health technologies, disabilities and chronic illness, environment and health, pandemics and society, mental wellbeing, food bodies and wellbeing, alcohol and substance use.

Module Delivery
This is a mainly lecture based module with supporting seminars/workshops and student-centred learning. The on-campus activities will be supplemented and supported with online activities where appropriate.
