Aims of Module

To provide the student with the ability to evaluate the legislative aspects of social work practice in the fields of juvenile justice or mental health or older people.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Explain the processes of decision making that are associate with the legal process, responsibilities and duties of social workers as well as rights of clients.
2. Apply aspects of law specific to a chosen elective.
3. Evaluate legislation, social policy and organisational structures specific to the area of social work activity elected.

Indicative Module Content

Legislative, social policy and social work practice context in relation to juvenile justice or mental health problems or disability or older people. Specific to the area of social work activity elected: Social policy context; Legislative framework; Theoretical models; Social work responsibilities and duties; Client/user rights; Social work policy and practice

Additional Notes

In order to uphold Requirements 3.4 CCETSW Rules and Requirements - Assessment of law, students who are based in England will be offered a Law Elective to further demonstrate understanding and application of "the legislation relating to social work in the country in which they train". The aims and objectives for this Elective will parallel those for Scottish based students but in the context of the legislative framework and social work implications for that Elective.
