To provide knowledge and understanding of practice issues in the range of social work activity with children, young people and families. |
Learning Outcomes for Module | |

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to: | |
1 | Identify and analyse current childcare legislation and policy framework. |
2 | Identify and analyse the role of social work in the provision of child welfare and family support services |
3 | Appraise the challenges of inter professional practice in social work with children and families. |
Indicative Module Content |
---|
Prevention and support services for children and families. Supporting Families. Child care/child protection law. Adoption, Fostering, Residential Care. The role of the State in family life. The Children's Hearing System. The Investigation of abuse. Child Protection Case Conferences. Multi-agency working. Working with the effects of abuse. The Criminal Justice dimension of child protection. Through Care Provision, Youth Justice, Assessment of Children's Needs, Risk Assessment in Child Protection, Parental Substance Misuse and the Impact on Children. Reflects the knowledge, skills and professional confidence and competence requirements around engagement with public protection. The module is delivered and underpinned by a commitment to core social work values of respect, individualisation, empowerment, anti discriminatory and anti oppressive principles. |
