Aims of Module

The aim of the module is to enable the student to evaluate, and apply to practice, a range of models of counselling.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Evaluate theoretical models underpinning counselling.
2. Evaluate and apply a range of counselling methods to appropriate instances of social work practice.
3. Recognise ehtical dilemmas in counselling and ways of dealing with these.

Indicative Module Content

Counselling ethics and ethical dilemmas. Models of counselling: Person centred cognitive/behavioural, psychodynamic, transactional analysis and gestalt. Applications of counselling models to professional practice including: relationships, sexuality, children, families, groups, bereavement and loss, and organisational settings.
