Aims of Module
To provide the student with the ability to evaluate health care organisations and the medical, social and alternative models of health.
Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

Indicative Module Content
An introduction to the sociology of health and the development of contemporary medicine. A critical appraisal of modern medicine. A critical appraisal for modern medicine. The lay, medical and alternative concepts of health. The lay - professional relationship. The Sociology of organisations and bureaucracies. Work, motivation, quality of work life and work satisfaction. Stress and burn out. Conflict management and negotiation. Organisation development, teams and team building. Communication, culture, structure and organisational change.

Mode of Delivery
This module is based on seminar discussion groups, case studies and lectures. Students are required to undertake careful and critical reading of the relevant literature.
