Aims of Module
To enable the student to understand and analyse a range of conceptual frameworks and methods of working with adults who use social care services: adults with disabilities, older adults and those with mental health problems.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Discuss social policy and legislation related to social work in adult social care.
2 Demonstrate understanding of a range of differing perspectives on ageing, disability and mental health that would inform the assessment of needs in adult social care.
3 Apply knowledge of social work practice to promote participation and rights of people using adult social care services, within the context of evidence based practice.

Indicative Module Content
Legislation and policy relating to adult social care: integration of health and social care, interprofessional working, assessment, care management, participation of supported persons in services. Definitions of disability, end of life care, mental health and mental illness, long term and complex conditions, developing skills and critical understanding of interventions and services for adults. The module is delivered and underpinned by a commitment to core social work values of respect, individualisation, empowerment, anti-discriminatory and anti-oppressive principles and upholds the values and ethical practice standards that reflect the requirements relating to engagement with public protection.
