Aims of Module
To provide the student with the ability to understand contemporary society within a social policy context and its relationship to social work practice.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Demonstrate an understanding of a range of social policies and their impact on contemporary social issues and problems.
2 Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between social policy and social work practice.
3 Apply themes from social policy to social work practice.

Indicative Module Content
Historical antecedents of social policy. Relationship between social policy and social work practice. Key concepts in policy formulation and analysis. Models of welfare provision. Philosophical and ideological underpinning of social policy. Social policy pertaining to a range of social phenomena. Reflects the knowledge, skills and professional confidence and competence requirements around engagement with public protection.

Module Delivery
The module is based on directed and private study supplemented by lectures and online resources. Introductory materials are linked to course material and directed and private study is supported by tutorials
