Aims of Module
To provide the student with the knowledge and understanding of the relationship between contemporary society and welfare services across the life span.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Explain the relationship between social policy, politics and society.
2 Explain the concept of social construction as it applies to individuals and groups.
3 Explain social exclusion as it affects individuals and the responses of political, legal and social welfare institutions.
4 Appraise the historical context of welfare provision.

Indicative Module Content
Theoretical approaches to residential care. Traditions of relational models of practice. Social policy, law, politics and society. Personal social services, education, health and housing. History of residential care services. Disability and human rights across the life course. Social exclusion. Social construction. Social Justice. Inter-disciplinary practice. Values. Codes of practice.

This module is based on directed and private study supplemented by lectures and tutorials. Introductory lectures are linked to course materials.
