Aims of Module

To develop the students knowledge and understanding of the nature and meaning of social policy.
To develop students understanding of social work values, methods, knowledge and conceptual frameworks.
To enable students to comprehend the significance of social policy in influencing and determining the role social work and social welfare in society


Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Define and analyse social work values, policies and practice.
2. Define discuss and analyse contemporary social policies.
3. Analyse and discuss the relationship between social policy and social work in a diverse society.

Indicative Module Content

Social policy, social divisions, social exclusion, social inclusion, health, personal social services, welfare state, education, social security, employment, housing, children, families, criminal justice, personalisation, service users, carers.

Social work values and ethical dilemmas, anti-discriminatory practice, communication, methods of assessment and risk assessment, methods of social work intervention, evidence based practice, reflective practice

Within the policy overview of the module there is a specific introduction to how social policy underpins social work practice in general which includes work with children and families. The module also introduces the context and application of theories of social work assessment and intervention, where within the broad introduction to social work practice there is a natural focus on children and families, through the use of case studies and the module workbook material. This core knowledge is supplemented by basic skills and competency work via a range of teaching methods that address the knowledge, skills and professional confidence and competence requirements of Key Capabilities in Child Care and Child Protection (Scottish Executive, 2006). The module is delivered and underpinned by a commitment to core social work values of respect, individualisation, empowerment, anti discriminatory and anti oppressive principles and upholds the values and ethical practice standards of Key Capabilities.
