Aims of Module
To explore, assess and evaluate concepts of citizenship and community. To develop critical thinking about models of human nature, democracy, civic capacity and social change.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Explain theories of social organisation and individuality both historical and cultural.
2 Identify current trends in equality, inclusion, wellbeing and social justice across the lifespan.
3 Apply key aspects of citizenship and community development to practice.

Historical and cultural perspectives of citizenship and community. Civic capacity and participation. Social justice, wellbeing and equality. Social exclusion. Empowerment. Legislation and policy. Alternative approaches to recovery capital. Strength and deficit approaches. Citizen-led social change. Social capital. Participation. Tolerance. Aspiration. Education ‘in the process’. Housing. Independent living. Enterprise and agency. Democracy. Gender, race and citizenship. Values. Law and social policy. Evidence based practice. Codes of practice.
