Aims of Module
To provide the student with the ability to understand key sociological concepts and apply these to social work practice.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Demonstrate an understanding of sociology and a range of sociological concepts.
2 Demonstrate an understanding as to how sociological knowledge underpins practice in social work.

Indicative Module Content
Sociological imagination, social construction, sociology of the family, culture, gender, identity, deviance, inequality and social class, social exclusion, social structures and divisions, poverty, racism, disablism, sociology of health. The module aims to provide students with a knowledge and understanding of sociological concepts and theories through exploring issues of childhood, adolescence, families, communities and society. The module is delivered and underpinned by a commitment to core social work values of respect, individualisation, empowerment, anti-discriminatory and anti-oppressive principles and upholds the values and ethical practice standards that reflect the requirements relating to engagement with public protection.

Module Delivery
This module is based on directed and private study supplemented by lectures and podcasts. Introductory materials are linked to the course material. Directed and private study is supported by tutorials.
